ACT
Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT)
An action-oriented approach to psychotherapy that stems from traditional behavior therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy.
Theoretical Foundations
Developed by Steven C. Hayes, ACT is based on Relational Frame Theory (RFT). The core goal is not to eliminate difficult feelings; rather, it is to be present with what life brings us and to "move toward valued behavior".
The Hexaflex (Core Processes)
- Contacting the Present Moment: Conscious connection with whatever is happening right here, right now.
- Defusion: Learning to step back or detach from unhelpful thoughts and worries.
- Acceptance: Opening up and making room for painful feelings and sensations.
- Self-as-Context: The observing self; pure awareness of thoughts, feelings, and actions.
- Values: Clarifying what is most important, deep in your heart.
- Committed Action: Taking effective action guided by values.
