Meta-Analysis: MDMA-Assisted Therapy for Treatment-Resistant PTSD

Published: November 2023 | Category: Emerging Modalities

With the recent publication of the second MAPS-sponsored Phase 3 trial (MAPP2)& in Nature Medicine, MDMA-assisted therapy for PTSD has cleared a significant hurdle toward FDA approval. This brief examines the clinical implications of these findings for practicing psychotherapists.

Efficacy Findings

In the MAPP2 trial, 71.2% of participants in the MDMA-assisted therapy group no longer met diagnostic criteria for PTSD at the study's end, compared to 47.6% in the placebo with therapy group. The effect size (Cohen's d = 0.7) is notable given that the cohort comprised individuals with severe, chronic PTSD (average duration >14 years).

The Therapeutic Framework

It is crucial to understand that MDMA is not administered as a standalone pharmacological treatment. The protocol requires a specific non-directive, inner-directed psychotherapeutic framework, heavily influenced by Internal Family Systems (IFS) and somatic approaches.
